The Best Foods To Eat Before Working Out

Some people like to workout on an empty stomach, but if you're like me, you need that preworkout meal. The key to choosing the right foods before the gym is to be conscious of what your meal contains. Be sure that your meals are full of protein, healthy fats and good carbs to give you the energy and stamina you need to crush that workout sessions. So let's dive into some of the best options for you.

Toast with peanut butter and banana

This pre-gym snack is filled with healthy fats, simple carbs, and potassium. This will fill you up just enough to give you the energy you need to tackle your workout. Oh and it better be crunchy peanut butter, because we all know that it's way better than smooth!

Chicken and veggies

The bodybuilder's go-to meal. If you are in need of a meal before you hit the gym, try some chicken and veggies. If you can, try to eat dark meat chicken, it has more good fat to help keep you full during your time at the gym. The veggies have a lot of fiber to help with your digestion.

Oatmeal and fruit

If you are working out in the morning, you probably want more of a "breakfasty" type of food. It is a complex carb which means it will stay in your system longer, giving you more energy for a longer period of time. As far as fruits go, pick your favorite one! You could do blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, or bananas, which all contain antioxidants to help prevent cell damage. Technically tomatos are a fruit, but if you add those to your oatmeal I'm going to have to assume you're a physcopath...

Protein shake

Running late to the gym? The protein shake is quick and easy! You can go with the basic scoop + almond milk/water. Or if you have a blender you can add a scoop of your favorite protein powder with peanut butter, fruit, and even some leafy greens to help keep you full during the workout. Plus, it is full of healthy fats and protein which will make your body super happy.

Favorites From Other Pure Cut Customers

On our Instagram, we asked the Pure Cut Family if they had any favorite meals or snacks to eat before working out. Here's what they had to say...

@NickkBeaton - "Almonds match perfectly with Cocaine Preworkout before a workout"

@RCCaruana - "Either caramel rice cakes or rice cakes with jam"

@SlighRyan - "Eggs and potatoes for energy, or oatmeal. Anything that has a decent amount of fast-acting carbs for energy. And a scoop of preworkout of course!"

@GymMemesBrah - "Usually some kind of protein bar just to hold me over"

Meal Timing

As far as time goes, if you are wanting to eat a bigger meal before your workout, it is best to plan that out beforehand, so you don't stuff yourself before the gym. I can speak from experience that it's not a good idea, especially when it's a 20 piece of nuggets before a HIIT workout. Plan the meal for about two to three hours before you go to the gym.

However, if you only need a quick snack, you can consume that about 45-60 minutes before your workout. Plan accordingly and choose the foods that make your taste buds and your body the happiest.

Oh and don't forget to prep that post-workout meal to maximize those gains!
